Mary Did You Know?

My Soul Exalts You Lord! Luke 1:46

With the year coming to an end, I have been reflecting on everything that has happened. However, this morning, my thoughts go way back. Many years back to when my children were babies snuggled in my arms. What tender sweet moments of gazing on them, wondering what they would be when they grew up. Asking God what I should do with this gift He had given me. This bundle of joy I held in my arms so full of potential and possibilities.

I look around today and see people hurting, some going through loss of a loved one, a wayward child, a broken marriage or the homeless and I am reminded - that person use to be some mother’s tiny baby whom she rocked in her arms. That young man was created by God. That broken woman is God’s treasured possession. All these thoughts swimming through my mind brought me back to reality this morning.

Back to our roots. Back to the beginning. Back to the start of our earthly life. God created us and loves us. We enter this world as a tiny baby. Our mothers, whether by birth or adoption, care for us and nurture us and probably wonder just like I did with my children…” I wonder what God’s plan is for my little baby.”

As I was reflecting on all of this, a popular Christmas Carol came to mind, “Mary Did You Know.”

When I first heard this song, I was in a Christmas Program at our church in South Carolina. I remember tears welling up in my eyes as a woman dressed in biblical costume holding a baby sang, Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations, then came the words that made me realize the mightiness of what God had done…

“Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod? When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God”

Jesus came from Heaven, where Angels trod, down to earth! God’s unconditional “no matter what” kind of love, the John 3:16 love is so true! I am overwhelmed that God would leave heaven and come to earth for us humans!

In 1984, a young singer song-writer in Virginia, Mark Lowry, wrote the words to “Mary Did You Know.” It wasn’t until 1991 that Buddy Greene put the melody to the song. Here we are over 25 plus years later and Mary Did You Knowis still sung on radio and social media today! God is using it to encourage generations of what great things He hath done!

Imagine holding a baby that would be the Savior of the world! Imagine tenderly kissing that little boy goodnight! Imagine sitting down for coffee with Mary and asking her what it is like to raise the Son of God! Wow- this song points us to the reason for the season!

A few years ago, Tyler Scarlett wrote an article titled, “The Story Behind the Carol: “Mary, Did You Know?” He ends the article with this-

“While so many modern Christmas songs focus on “the season,” Lowry’s timeless work is a refreshing reminder of its “reason.” Surely, there are many things which Mary did not know. Yet, in her own song, Mary did, at least, know this: “My soul exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior…For the Mighty One has done great things for me… The Lord has given help to Israel so that we remember His mercy.” Luke 1:46ff

This Christmas season…be reminded to remember the reason!

What Christmas Carol has reminded you of the reason for the season?

Mary sang in Luke 1:46 “My soul exalts You Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” Think of a time that your soul exalted God and your spirit rejoiced in His Salvation. Take a moment and Praise the Lord.
