A Facebook friend recently posted a video in which she stated that she was “over” the phrase uncertain times. “What about you?”, she asked. Her question rattled around in my mind for a few days as I thought about the fear we are collectively feeling as we face so many unknowns during this time.
It brought my mind back to a time in my life when I was working at a large financial firm and felt secure in my job. I went to work on a Friday morning feeling sure of my position when the rug was pulled out from under me. All of a sudden, my career with this company looked uncertain. Fear came rushing into my heart and mind as the days ahead became unclear.
The truth is, we face uncertainty every day. Do we really ever know what the day holds for us when our feet hit the floor in the morning?
We can probably all recall a time in our lives when we didn’t know what was coming next. None of us really like feeling unsure. We want to know what lies ahead so that we can prepare ourselves and walk forward with confidence knowing what to expect. While it’s true that we should embrace the unknown by faith sometimes, it feels good to know the destination before we start the journey.
Fear can keep us from moving forward if we focus on the uncertainty tomorrow holds. Therefore, we must focus our minds on the only thing that we know to be sure.
When we place our trust in God and let our lives be defined by our faith, the words “uncertain times” have no power over us anymore. Things may look unclear from our point of view, but God knows what the future holds and we can trust that He sees the way clearly, even when we don’t.
This month on the Hearts Unleashed Blog, we have been digging deeper into Psalm 119. Every day as we have read a part of this beautiful psalm, we are reminded of the truth and certainty we find in God’s Word. Even though we may face instabilty in our days, we can trust that His Word is sure forever.
All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal. -Psalm 119:160
When we read the news or scroll through social media, everything seems out of control and uncertainty reigns. When we read the Bible, we will know that God has everything under control.
How do we find hope, peace, and joy during times like these when the road ahead is foggy? We turn our focus to the only thing that we know to be certain, God’s Word.
Verse 114 - You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
Verse 165 – Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.
Verse 111 – Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.
1. How do you find hope when facing uncertainty?
2. What is a scripture that you turn to when you are feeling frustrated and need hope, peace, or joy?
3. Read Psalm 119 in its entirety and share a verse or two that inspired you.
