“I have treasured Your word in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11
“….and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17b
In our Hearts Unleashed series, we have been talking about the Armor of God from Ephesians 6 that are listed after Paul encourages us to be “strong in the Lord and the strength of His might.” (Eph. 6:10) He also tells us how we are to stand firm by putting on the full armor of God- not our own armor, because the armor of God is the only armor that will allow us to “stand firm against the schemes of the devil” (Eph. 6:11) and to “resist in the evil day” (Eph. 6:13). We must know who our enemy is and how to fight in the “strength of the Lord”!!
The sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon mentioned in Ephesians 6. So, what is it? It is the Word of God - Scripture.
In Matthew chapter 4, Jesus is tempted by Satan. Jesus resisted the attack by reciting Scripture. That is our example! WOW!! Jesus knew what we would need, and He showed us how to use it. Here’s the thing, Satan is sneaky and cunning. He will try to twist the truth just enough to discourage us, but if we know what God’s word says, we will recognize the lies and replace them with the truth.
We should not take this to mean that we must memorize the entire Bible, although that would be amazing if you did. It means we must be in God’s word every day and hide His words in our hearts by memorizing verses and tucking them away. We should all have a dagger list of verses memorized. from the entirety of God’s word, so they can be pulled out of the belt of truth when the time comes to fight the enemy. Fight with the sword God gave you!! He will bring it to mind, but we have to take the time to memorize it. This is a powerful weapon that God gives us.
I recall a time in my life when I came under attack by the enemy. It was brutal, scary, and hard to believe. That night, I met with my Bible study ladies, and I explained to them what I was facing. They began writing down and praying Scripture for me. In a matter of hours, the attack was over almost as quickly as it had started. One of the ladies prayed a specific passage from her dagger list and it was through that prayer that it became evident that the enemy had been subdued. I realized at that point that memorizing Bible verses wasn’t just to check a box; it was an actual powerful tool that God gives us to be victorious in our battle with the enemy.
Scripture memorization became huge to me- remembering the truth of God’s word. I have been known to stand on my coffee table or chair in my room shouting it out, especially the verses from Ephesians 6. I do scare my cat, but the enemy flees. There is nothing in my own strength or battle gear that can do that.
God has called me to places to serve that teach others the importance of memorizing verses. It keeps me on my toes and allows me to fill my belt of truth with what I need to stand firm when the” schemes of the devil” come. Not if, sister, but when.
Stop trying to fight in your own strength. Stand firm in His might!
Do you have a dagger list of verses you have memorized? Share some of those verses with us here on the blog.
Share with us a time that God has used Scripture in your life. What were the verses? How did they impact you?
Become intentional about memorizing Scripture. Start with Ephesians 6:10-18 if you need a place to start. Or use some that others shared from the Day 1 challenge question. Start anywhere. Start small, one verse as at time. Say it out loud, write it down on a notecard to carry with you or put it on your bathroom mirror, refrigerator, your desk at the office or any place you spend time. If you have Scripture memorization tips, please share them with us on the blog. We are always in need of new ways to memorize!!
