I met a new friend for the first time outside of our normal church group for a Saturday morning coffee recently. It was so refreshing and uplifting to spend time with another Christian woman to talk about our struggles, our fears, and the dreams that God has placed in our hearts. As we talked about our lives and shared stories, I couldn’t help but marvel at the way God brings other faithful women into our lives just when we need an encouraging reminder that we are not walking this path alone.
I think of this friend that I am just starting to know better and of other Christian sisters that I have known longer. These women have made a difference in my life because they have listened when I needed an ear, encouraged me when I was low, discipled me when I needed guidance and prayed for me in tough times.
Women need other women.
As Christian women, it is of the utmost importance that we surround ourselves with other godly women as we journey through life. The women we choose to surround ourselves with are the biggest influence, outside of our families, on our behavior, attitudes and beliefs. Jim Rohn, a motivational speaker and successful businessman, once said “You become like the five people you spend the most time with. Choose carefully.”
We live in a culture that has a skewed view of femininity that leaves many women confused. We are inundated with messages that tell us that we should aspire to be a “boss babe”, make self-care a priority, live OUR truth, or be our authentic selves. These messages and others like them can cause us to compare our journey to the one that others are walking or to view other women as our competition rather than our community.
When we fall into the traps of comparison or competition, we find ourselves spending time with other women who don’t challenge us or help us grow in our faith. Sisters let’s not let one another fall into these traps!
Christian women need other Christian women.
C. S. Lewis said, “Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” When we come together in Christian community and take the time to get to know one another, we discover those friends that understand the journey that we are on and challenge us to keep going when the going gets tough. When we connect with these friends, we can say, “what? You too?”
This is what JOurneY Women of Calvary is all about. Bringing women together so that we can make meaningful connections with other women who share our faith. Our vision is to grow this community through discipleship, purposeful fellowship and service to our church, community and to one another. We prayerfully ask you to join us as we step out in faith to grow His kingdom, one woman at a time.
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. -Proverbs 13:20
